Inter-Schools Scheduling Under Scrutiny as Concerns Grow Over Student-Athlete Welfare

Kwasi Menlah Nyankeh writes: With the greatest respect and sincere concern for student welfare, I wish to humbly appeal to the organizers of the Inter-Schools Sports Festival and the District Football Education Director to reconsider the current scheduling arrangement of the competitions.

At the moment, Football and Athletics are organized within the same week. While this may appear convenient from an administrative perspective, it unfortunately places considerable physical and mental demands on many student-athletes. A large number of students who represent their schools in football are equally involved in athletics events. Requiring them to compete in two physically intensive sports within such a limited period places excessive strain on their muscles, increases fatigue, reduces focus, and significantly raises the risk of injuries.

Aside from the physical burden, this situation also affects the quality of performance. When students are fatigued, they are unable to perform at their highest level in either discipline. Consequently, the overall standard of competition suffers and may not accurately showcase the remarkable talent and potential that exist within our schools.

For many students, these co-curricular activities represent far more than just school events. They are valuable opportunities for young athletes to test their limits, overcome challenges, and display their abilities on a larger stage. Well-organized competitions can attract spectators, supporters, and even talent scouts who may offer promising pathways and life-changing opportunities to these young sportsmen and women.

In view of these concerns, I respectfully suggest that Football be allocated its own specific days or weeks, separate from Athletics. Similarly, Athletics should also have a dedicated period in the calendar. Such an arrangement will provide students with adequate recovery time, enable better concentration, improve performance levels, and ensure fairer competition.

A carefully structured schedule will not only safeguard the health and well-being of student-athletes but will also enhance the quality and prestige of the Inter-Schools Sports Festival. I sincerely hope this appeal will receive thoughtful consideration for the benefit of all students involved.

Thank you for your understanding and continued support.
