Parliament Passes Bill Legalising Okada and Boosting Road Safety

Parliament has passed the Road Traffic Amendment Bill 2025, marking a significant shift in the country’s transportation landscape. This much anticipated legislation legalizes the use of motorcycles, tricycles, and quadricycles for commercial purposes, aiming to boost youth employment and enhance road safety.

The bill, championed by Transport Minister Joseph Nikpe Bukari, seeks to sanitize road transport services, strengthen safety measures, and introduce stricter penalties for offenders.

“The Road Traffic Amendment Bill seeks to sanitise road transport services. We have had several issues involving road users, and this bill aims to introduce stricter punishment, enhance safety measures, and ensure the effective and efficient use of our roads,”Bukari explained in Parliament.

Key highlights of the bill include increased penalties for traffic offenses, a higher limit for determining alcohol concentration in drivers, and comprehensive regulation of the road transport industry.

This development is expected to create new opportunities for Ghana’s youth and improve the overall transportation network.
