Nigeria’s iconic centre-back and captain, William Troost-Ekong, has officially announced his retirement from international football after 10 years with the Super Eagles.
The 32-year-old defender, who currently plies his trade with Saudi Pro League outfit Al-Kholood, steps away after 83 caps and 8 goals, closing a career defined by courage, consistency, and exceptional leadership.
His decision comes in the aftermath of Nigeria’s painful exit from the race to the 2026 FIFA World Cup, following a playoff defeat to DR Congo.
Since making his debut in 2015 against Chad in an AFCON qualifier, he rose to become the backbone of Nigeria’s defence, commanding, reliable, and battle-hardened. Over the years, he delivered standout performances at major tournaments, earning respect across Africa and beyond.
Honoured with the title of Member of the Order of the Niger (MON), Troost-Ekong not only led on the pitch but also inspired off it, setting the standard for professionalism and commitment that shaped the modern identity of the Super Eagles.
