The Government of Ghana has issued a firm condemnation of the military coup in the Republic of Guinea-Bissau, describing it as an unconstitutional and unacceptable usurpation of authority that threatens democratic governance in the West African nation.
In a statement released by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Wednesday, Ghana expressed “profound concern and deep dissatisfaction” over the attempt by elements of Guinea-Bissau’s military to overturn the will of the people, barely days after the peaceful conduct of the country’s presidential and legislative elections on November 23, 2025.
According to the Ministry, the coup has “dangerously interrupted the democratic trajectory of the nation” and obstructed the anticipated announcement of election results scheduled for November 27.
Ghana called for the immediate restoration of constitutional order in Guinea-Bissau and urged all stakeholders to respect democratic processes. The statement emphasized that any electoral disputes must be resolved through peaceful, transparent, and legally recognized means.
The Government also demanded the protection of citizens and foreign nationals amidst the unrest, highlighting concerns for the safety of the ECOWAS Election Observation Mission currently deployed in Guinea-Bissau. Ensuring their secure passage, the statement stressed, is a matter of urgency.
Additionally, Ghana appealed to the people of Guinea-Bissau to remain calm, avoid actions that could escalate tensions, and allow diplomatic pathways to prevail. The government reaffirmed its strong support for ECOWAS and the African Union in their coordinated efforts to address the crisis, emphasizing adherence to regional and continental protocols on democracy and constitutional rule.
