Ghana to Fully Fund Francis Abu’s Surgery After Kirin Cup Horror Injury

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has taken full financial responsibility for the surgery of Black Stars midfielder Francis Abu, who suffered a severe ankle fracture during Ghana’s Kirin Cup match against Japan in Nagoya last Friday.

Abu, a key midfielder for French Ligue 1 outfit Toulouse FC, was forced off the pitch in excruciating pain following a tough challenge from Japanese midfielder Tanaka Ao. He was immediately transported to Toyota Memorial Hospital, where he underwent a successful surgical procedure, an update the GFA had earlier confirmed.

Speaking to Asempa FM, GFA Communications Director Henry Asante Twum disclosed that the association has absorbed all medical expenses linked to the procedure.

“The GFA has covered the full cost of Francis Abu’s surgery. All medical bills arising from the operation have been settled,” Asante Twum confirmed.
“We have held extensive discussions with Toulouse FC regarding his next steps. He will return to his club for further management, and any additional support required will be communicated accordingly.”

In an exemplary act of sportsmanship, Asante Twum revealed that Tanaka Ao, whose challenge resulted in the injury—has personally reached out to express remorse and convey heartfelt wishes to Abu.

“Ao has called the coach and sent messages expressing his regret and wishing Abu a speedy recovery,” he said.
“He has conducted himself with absolute professionalism and has even indicated his willingness to meet Abu once he regains fitness. The Japanese FA has also been very supportive throughout the process.”

A Black Stars physiotherapist is currently stationed in Japan to provide continuous care and monitor Abu’s early recovery stages as arrangements are made for his return to France.
