Western Regional Minister Urges Heightened Security at Elubo Border Ahead of Ivory Coast Election

Western Regional Minister, Joseph Nelson has called on security personnel stationed at the Elubo border to remain on high alert ahead of Ivory Coast’s presidential election scheduled for October 25, 2025.

His directive comes amid rising tensions in neighboring Ivory Coast, which have already led to an influx of people crossing into Ghana. According to reports, over 1,500 Ivorians have entered Ghana through the Elubo border in recent days, seeking refuge from the growing political uncertainty.

Hon. Nelson emphasized the need for enhanced surveillance and coordination among security agencies, including the Immigration Service, Customs, Police, and the Ghana Armed Forces, to ensure national security and prevent any illegal activities at the border.

“We must be extra vigilant during this period. While Ghana remains a safe haven, we cannot allow individuals with criminal intentions to take advantage of this situation to enter the country illegally,” the Minister stated.

He further urged border officials to conduct thorough checks on travelers and goods, and to strengthen intelligence sharing to detect and deter any potential threats.

The Minister also assured that the Western Regional Security Council (REGSEC) is closely monitoring developments along the border and will continue to collaborate with national security agencies to safeguard lives and property.

Ghana has long maintained cordial relations with Ivory Coast, and authorities say humanitarian considerations will guide the country’s response to any influx of refugees—while ensuring that security and public safety remain top priorities.
