Ceremony at Atuabo marks new chapter for Nzema traditional leadership.
In a historic and colorful ceremony held yesterday at Atuabo, Awulae Blay IX was officially coronated as the Paramount Chief of the Eastern Nzema Traditional Council. The event drew together traditional rulers, elders, government officials, and community members, signifying a new era of unity and leadership within the Nzema traditional area.

The coronation, steeped in rich Nzema custom and symbolism, was attended by all divisional chiefs and their elders, reflecting a collective endorsement of Awulae Blay IX’s ascension to the paramount stool. The ceremony, which featured traditional drumming, dancing, and the performance of sacred rites, marked the formal transfer of authority to the new paramount chief.

Speaking on behalf of the Standing Committee of the Council, Nana Bonyah Kofi IV, who had been serving as Acting Omanhene, addressed the long-standing disputes within the Royal Ndweafo Family, describing the conflict as “a fight between common sense and arrogance, recklessness and vandalism.” He emphasized the need for reconciliation and maturity as the traditional area moves forward under new leadership.

In a symbolic gesture during the ceremony, official documents were presented to the Queen Mother, Obaahema Avo Nyima III, declaring the denouncement of Awulae Amihere Kpanyinli III as Paramount Chief and affirming Awulae Blay IX as the legitimate ruler of the Eastern Nzema Traditional Council.
While confirming the Council’s decision to sever ties with Awulae Amihere Kpanyinli III, Nana Bonyah Kofi IV reiterated that the Council would continue to pay homage and reverence to the Ndweafo Royal Stool, acknowledging its historical and spiritual significance in Nzema tradition.
Dignitaries in attendance included the Ellembelle District Chief Executive, Hon. Joseph Agyekum, the Presiding Member, Hon. Charles Kwasi, the District Coordinating Director, Mr. Alhassan Mohammed, and several other distinguished guests and delegates from across the region.

The coronation of Awulae Blay IX is widely seen as a moment of renewal for the Eastern Nzema Traditional Council, symbolizing unity, continuity, and the reaffirmation of cultural identity among the people of Nzema East.
