Balthazar Egonga, the former Director-General of Equatorial Guinea’s National Financial Investigation Agency (ANIF), was found guilty of embezzling public funds and received an 18-year prison sentence.

Balthazar misappropriated 910 million of the 1 billion Francs that Engonga was discovered to have embezzled. The punishment is meant to serve as a warning to others who commit corrupt activities.
Balthazar reportedly indulged in extravagant spending, including living lavishly and indulging in women. But now that his lavish lifestyle is over, he will have to deal with the fallout from his deeds.

The case emphasizes how crucial transparency and accountability are to the administration of public finances. No one is above the law, as Balthazar’s sentence shows, and those who do corrupt acts will be held accountable.
Engonga had previously been placed on remand in prison after being fired as the anti-graft head of Equatorial Guinea. He was arrested in a high-profile scandal and held at Malabo’s Black Beach Prison.

Recall that Engonga has been facing severe backlash after investigators discovered over 400 explicit videos involving him and the wives of prominent national figures. The scandal surfaced amid a fraud probe into Engonga, leading ANIF officials to search his home and office.
