The Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Jinapor, says all government Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) must now make plans in their budgets to pay for the electricity they use.
He made this known during a meeting with the parliamentary select Committee on Energy and officials from the power sector on 15th May, 2025. According to him, this move is to ensure MDAs take full responsibility for their power consumption.
“All MDAs are supposed to pay for their electricity bills. They have to budget for it,” Mr. Jinapor said.
He explained that key areas like health, education, security, and the presidency are included in this directive. However, some important sections within these areas will be exempted.
“ In the health sector, only the laboratories, theatres, and wards will not pay. In education, it’s just the lecture halls that are covered – not dormitories or dining halls,” he added.
He said these classifications have been made, and Parliament is reviewing them for final approval and publication.
Meanwhile, the Ministry has also revealed that Ghana urgently needs 1.1 billion Ghana Cedis to buy fuel for power generation. The current supply of liquid fuel, they said, can only last for 2.6 more days.
