After a three-year legal struggle over a number of allegations, including perjury, the controversial Member of Parliament for Assin North in the Central Region, Gyakye Quayson, was cleared and dismissed by the criminal jurisdiction of the Accra High Court, which is presided over by Justice Mary Ekue Yanzuh.
Since the judge believed that the prosecution had not presented sufficient evidence against him, the MP, who turned down the new Attorney General’s offer to end the 2022 lawsuit against him, is now free to go.
After his name was expunged from the legislature in 2023 after a Supreme Court ruling discrediting him from running in the 2020 elections, Gyakie Quayson re-contested and won the Assin North parliamentary seat.
Up until today, he had been battling accusations of deceit of public office, forgery of a passport or travel certificate, knowingly making a false declaration, perjury, and false declaration for office.
If the charges had been sufficiently supported by the prosecution, the MP would have been forced to open his defense.
His dual citizenship was the subject of this action, which was part of the substantive case against him for running for MP without promptly renouncing his citizenship as required by the constitution.
“This is justice for Assin North, and justice for Ghana. This is justice for everybody,” he said.
Lady Justice Mary Ekue Yanzuh was commended by him for her impartiality, saying,
“This is a court of law, but they were attempting to prosecute me.” Persecution and prosecution are two different things. Our lady Justice Mary Ekue Yanzuh is someone I am extremely proud of. Although the regulations forbid it, I was going to tell her in court. “More blessings for her; she is a very good human being,” he stated.
Mr. Quayson maintained his confidence throughout the trial, claiming that attempts were made to convict him using “falsified documents” and that the prosecution was politically motivated.
“There is nothing to be concerned about when you are correct. “The person will recover no matter where you put them,” he stated.
