Gov’t announces activities for 68th Independence celebration

The 68th anniversary of Ghana’s independence will be celebrated with a number of events that have been finalized by the National Celebrations Planning Committee (NCPC).

The remembrance of the 28th February Crossroad Shooting Incident on Friday, 28th February 2025, will kick off the festivities, according to a statement issued on Sunday, February 23. On Sunday, March 2, 2025, the national school quiz competition finals will take place, and on Tuesday, March 4, 2025, there will be a debating tournament.

Prior to the large ceremonial procession in the presidential forecourt on Thursday, March 6, 2025, the President will conduct the annual School Children Awards Program on Wednesday, March 5, 2025.

The NCPC Communications Subcommittee will provide historical and instructional materials in advance of the event on February 28 in an effort to raise public awareness and participation.

According to the committee, “with this new approach, we hope to reset the interest and participation of the youth and the general populace in this significant national event whilst remembering and honouring our heroes.”

As part of the programme, an X-space conversation will be hosted on the theme “The Changing Face of Civil Protests in Ghana: Lessons from the Past and Present.” The committee has also encouraged “radio, television, online and print media to host and publish conversations to promote the anniversary theme and other activities to deepen public participation.”

On Friday, February 28, 2025, at 8 a.m., the wreath-laying ceremony will be place at Nationalism Park and will be streamed live across several media.

Active participation from the public and media has been encouraged. “We encourage the media, bloggers, and the public to actively participate by sharing information with your viewers, listeners, and readers,” said Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the President’s spokesperson and Minister of Government Communications, in an appeal for support for the anniversary celebrations.
