Greater Accra Council of State election disturbed temporarily by chaos

On Tuesday, February 11, the Greater Accra Council of State election was briefly disrupted by unrest when Musah Ziyad, one of the candidates, was stopped by police as he tried to enter the polling station with a few other people.

Linda Ocloo, the Greater Regional Minister, escaped through the exit door amid the chaos.

But after a while, the situation calmed down, and the election could proceed.

In order to choose a representative for the area, 58 delegates are anticipated to vote.

The Electoral Commission (EC) is overseeing the poll, and Mrs. Gladys Pinkrah, the EC’s Greater Accra Regional Director, is ensuring that everything went according to plan.

Afotey-Agbo Joseph Nii Laryea, Summertime Kwabillna Ampong, Sampson Seyram Kwadzo Agbemabiese, Horvey Charles Yaw, Redeemer Worwui, Joseph Tetten Sottie, Annan Helbert Nii Aryee, Musah Ziyad, Samuel Duah, Albert Borketey Naawu, Nene Drolor Bosso Adamtey (I), Edmund Siaw Akugbey, and Obed Nyarko are among the thirteen candidates running in the Greater Accra Region.

Obed Nyarko, Albert Borketey Naawu, and Musah Ziyad, who was at the center of the chaos, are among the three of the 13 candidates who have withdrawn from the race, bringing the total down to 10.

A similar incident happened in the Ashanti region, where election officials suspended voting after a group of burly men stormed the polling station, allegedly destroying election materials and attacking some journalists in the process.

Under Articles 89 to 92 of the 1992 Constitution, the Council of State was created as an advisory body to assist the President in carrying out his responsibilities.
