Violence erupts at Ashanti Region Council of State polls, EC suspends sorting

A gang of unknown thugs broke into the polling center and disrupted the sorting and counting of ballots, causing the Ashanti Region’s Council of State elections to spiral into chaos.

Officials from the Electoral Commission (EC) were forced to halt the process when witnesses said the attackers entered the site with force, knocked over tables, destroyed ballot boxes, and scattered voting materials.

Yaw Owusu Obimpeh, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate and a clear front-runner, was unexpectedly defeated, which is thought to have set off the unrest.

Protesters who were upset with the conclusion allegedly started the violence and demanded that the results be reviewed.

The Electoral Commission has not yet issued an official statement addressing the disruption or detailing the next steps regarding the election results.

However, additional law enforcement officers have since been deployed to restore order and safeguard electoral materials after security personnel on-site struggled to contain the situation as tensions flared, leading to a temporary suspension of the election proceedings.
