Dr. John Kpikpi, the Progressive Alliance for Ghana (PAG) presidential candidate, has promised to fight the threat of illegal mining, often known as galamsey, by enacting a two-year ban on small-scale mining.
The goal of this project is to streamline and restructure the mining industry.
His suggestion follows Ghana Water Company Limited’s (GWL) declaration that water supplies to Cape Coast and surrounding areas would be curtailed, with a key contributing factor to water insecurity being identified as unlawful mining.
Speaking at an acclamation ceremony in Accra, Dr. Kpikpi linked the problem to the country’s practice of leasing mineral resources to foreign companies.
“We will impose a two-year ban on small-scale mining. During this period, we will identify key individuals eligible to engage in mining, ensuring local communities have access to the resources,” he explained.
Dr. Kpikpi further emphasized the need for training on environmentally sustainable mining techniques.
“There are responsible ways to mine. We will train them, and after the two-year period, we will reopen the mines. Our plan addresses both galamsey and the broader issue of foreign control over our mineral wealth. We’ve handed over so much, and now we’re left scrambling for the little that remains,” he added.
