We thought Mahama wasn’t good enough but he’s way better than Akufo-Addo – Martin Kpebu

Lawyer Martin Kpebu, a private practitioner, has presented a severe assessment of President Akufo-Addo’s administration, claiming that former President John Dramani Mahama, who was previously seen to be insufficient, is now noticeably superior.

Speaking to the media on Tuesday during the “Hands off our hotels” protest, Kpebu lamented the status of government and underlined how Ghanaians are growing more and more irritated with the President’s handling of corruption.

Ghanaians are furious. I had to come here from the court. However, some people do not enjoy such luxury, and you will encounter furious people on a daily basis when interacting with people. They don’t like the corrupt Akufo-Addo administration,” he stated.

The remarks made by Mr. Kpebu coincides with rising worries about the current government’s excessive corruption and economic woes.

Kpebu conceded that the current administration has not lived up to the expectations when considering the choice taken in 2016 to choose Akufo-Addo over Mahama.

“We thought John Mahama was not good enough; that is why in 2016 we voted out JM thinking that Akufo-Addo was better. But now we’ve discovered that JM was way better,” he noted.

Kpebu underscored his argument by citing the Corruption Perception Index (CPI), noting that Ghana’s score has stagnated at 43 under Akufo-Addo for four consecutive years. This score, he pointed out, was the lowest recorded during Mahama’s tenure.

“Per the Corruption Perception Index, we’ve been at 43 for four years. Now 43 was the lowest the John Mahama administration got. So for four years, President Akufo-Addo’s best fight against corruption has always been at 43. He has plateaued, he can’t be better,” Mr Kpebu explained.

His words were accompanied by a warning that the situation would probably get worse in 2024 due to the administration’s appetite for new corruption scandals.

A fresh scandal every day. One controversy, one day. Our anger stems from this. We were unaware that Akufo-Addo was the height of corruption and mistakenly believed he was Junior Jesus. He emphasised this point.
